STUDENT COACHING

High School Students

The road to college starts early, even at the beginning of high school. From freshman to senior year, it is crucial that students develop a game plan to start preparing for college. Developing time management, organizational and study skills are crucial factors in high school and college success. Easier said than done, right?

High school students are some of the busiest people in the world. They study, takes classes, participate in after school activities and sports, work, do household chores, socialize, etc. Not to mention the fact that high school years are difficult for young students because they are filled with growing peer pressure, dramatic physical changes and an awakening need for more independence. They begin to weigh choices and consequences, make more decisions on their own, learn from their mistakes and establish their own set of values to guide their decisions and actions.

In the midst of all these things, it is easy for students to lose the urgency and drive to prepare for college. They often make decisions without realizing the consequences and the impact that those decisions will make on their future. They tend to stop confiding in their parents and no longer want their advice. We have all been there…but your child does not have to stay there.

That’s where I come in. As their coach, friend and confidant, I will provide your child with the support, encouragement, motivation and resources they need to prepare for college and challenge them to conquer the many obstacles that high school students face today.

The most common areas of focus include:

  • Organizational issues (homework, belongings, projects, etc.)
  • Time management skills
  • Developing solid study habits
  • Goal setting and planning
  • Exploring broader perspectives
  • Improving self-esteem and sense of competency
  • Eliminating procrastination
  • Prioritizing homework assignments
  • Develop better communication skills
  • Improve concentration and overall health by developing better nutrition and fitness habits
  • Ignoring peer pressure

College Students

College is different than high school. Whether you are attending a community college, university or private college, you are being thrust into an environment that is designed for self-reliance. For many students, you are on your own for the first time and are expected to hit the ground running. This is a very overwhelming and intimidating experience for those who were not taught appropriate study skills or how to juggle the extremely important work, academic and play schedule.

There are counselors and resources at most schools for college students, and you should take advantage of them, but I want to suggest an additional resource for your success. Unlike most school counselors, I have walked the walk. I started college with no confidence in myself academically and graduated with honors with all the confidence in the world. When I began my college career, I had to teach myself study habits, self discipline, and the work, academic, and play balance. I set new goals for myself everyday and never gave up until my goals were achieved. I have a story to tell that I believe will inspire you to always believe in yourself no matter what obstacles you have or have had to overcome. As your coach, friend and confidant, I will provide you with the resources and opportunity to get the most out of your college experience by conquering the many challenges that college students face today. As your student coach, I will partner with you to:

  • Adjust to the college experience faster.
  • Learn how to balance your work, academics and play schedule so you will excel in all three important areas.
  • Learn how to manage your time better, so you can do more work in less time.
  • Eliminate procrastination, the most common challenge of college students.
  • Learn how to prioritize homework assignments.
  • Set attainable goals.
  • Build confidence and become the person you wish you could be.
  • Develop better organizational skills.
  • Improve relationships.
  • Utilize the resources provided to you on campus for selecting the best internship.
  • Develop better social and communication skills.
  • Learn how to network and why it is so important.
  • Figure out what you want to do with your life.
  • Learn the skills you'll need for success after college during college -- while you have time to practice them.
  • Prepare for job interviews.
  • Write resumes that generate results.
  • Improve concentration and overall health by developing better nutrition and fitness habits.
  • Be far ahead of your peers when graduation comes.

“Typically, people in this situation know what they need to do, and they know how to do it, but for some reason it's still not happening. Or sometimes people know what they need to do, but they just aren't doing it. And sometimes people just don't know what to do. I think this last issue is the reason most people hire a coach, and they look to that coach for wisdom and experience in a situation that's similar to theirs.  He's someone who's been down the road, who's got the expertise.  You wouldn't try to climb Mount Everest by yourself; you'd find a guide who had been up the mountain before."  -Dave Buck, president of www.coachville.com, in a recent interview.
